Shopping for Work

A few months ago, a blogger friend was going into the corporate world for the first time. And having had no experience working in an office, she had the problem of not knowing which clothes are appropriate for work. Moreover, she didn’t think she has enough clothes for work.

I offered her these simple tips:

  • Bottoms in neutral colors. Skirts and slacks in black, grey, and khaki or chocolate brown are your best bets. They’re easy to maintain (clean) and easy to mix and match with tops. When buying bottoms, I usually think of the tops I already have. I only buy a bottom if I can wear or pair it with at least 5 tops.
  • Comfortable tops. Your tops should be comfortable enough to be worn from your house, while commuting, and at work. Your tops must not be too revealing. Avoid white tops or tops that are easily soiled, unless necessary. As a rule, I only buy a top if I can pair it with at least two bottoms I already own or plan to buy.
  • Comfortable shoes. If you work for an eight hour office, it is recommended that you invest in heeled shoes in black, khaki, or beige. Splurge on shoes, rather than on other items. Most companies do not require their employees to wear stockings anymore, but if you must, do not wear stockings with open toed shoes or sandals.
  • Functional bags. Invest in two or three bags that are large enough to carry all your things and an umbrella. Find and buy bags that would match your shoes. The material must be durable, and if possible, water proof. Pick bags that have zippers or those that can be secured well. Avoid those with pockets or compartments that can easily be opened.
  • Accessorize. Buy inexpensive bracelets, necklaces, and other accessories that will go well with your clothes, shoes, and bags. Accessorize only when you’re wearing a plain top and a plain bottom. Match your accessories. Do not wear a gold necklace with a plastic bangle.
  • Make-up. Invest in a good foundation, a concealer, a blush on, a versatile eye color palette, and lipstick or lip gloss. Do not be overly made up. If you are a commuter, do not put on make up at home. Best to bring a small tube of facial wash to work. Wash and apply make up at the workplace. Assuming you come to work a few minutes before your required time.
  • Shop in moderation. Buy one or two pieces every month, after you have already paid your rent, dues, and other bills.
  • Special occasions. Buy a basic black dress and a power suit for occasions when you have to wear one. Once your salary permits it, buy or have more made.

Hope I was able to help. ;)

Makes me glad I don’t work in your workplace. How DULL!

Working in a corporate environment doesn’t mean you can’t have a personality and some flair.

And the gold necklace + plastic bangle comment… I smell a SNOB!
