Everyday Make Up
Yup, that’s me without make up. Not exactly ugly, but not nice to look at either. Born with oily skin and almost always with eyebags, I have to wear make up everyday. I used to just use powder and blush on. But after my Basic Make Up Workshop at the Fashion Institute of Design and Arts with Archie Tolentino of Maybelline Philippines, I have changed my everyday make up look.
Before anything else, you must prepare your skin for make up. There are three simple steps: cleanse, tone, and moisturize.
The next step is to put on foundation to provide a clean, even, smooth canvass for make up application. Pick a foundation that will blend well with your skin tone. Apply evenly on your face and neck.
There are some people like me whose skin reacts with the foundation. Make sure to take this into account when choosing your foundation. In my case, the foundation becomes lighter throughout the day so I use a foundation that is slightly darker than my skin tone.
For my everyday make up, I use either a tinted moisturizer or the Maybelline Clear Smooth Minerals Healthy Naturals Liquid Foundation.
After applying foundation, I apply my ELF Coverall Stick on my eyebags and set it with the Maybelline Clear Smooth Extra Shine-Free Powder Foundation.
On some days when I have appointments and events, I apply eyeshadow which complement the color of my clothes. On most days, I use earth and neutral tones in shades of brown. I find that my skin tone looks good with earth tones, pinks and reds, purple and green eye shadow so I try to use these. I stay away from blue as much as possible.
It’s best to practice eye make up application on one’s self as much as possible so you will know the best style, shading, and application for yourself as each person has a different eye shape and eyelid area.
Archie suggests using eye liner as part of one’s everyday make up, but I have way too chinky eyes so I don’t use black eye liner. I have to try out white eye liner though to widen my eyes.
A trick which I learned from Archie is curling my eye lashes. Archie suggests crimping the eye lashes on three points: near the lid, at the middle, and at the tip. This way, the lashes will curl in a much smoother curve. This opens up and brightens the eyes better.
Another easy way to glam up your everyday look is using mascara. Mascara lengthens and adds volume to your lashes. Make sure your mascara is not expired so that it doesn’t clump and cause ugliness. I wear mascara even on days that I don’t put on eyeshadow. I find that it emphasizes my eyes well with little effort.
Everyday make up is not complete without blush on. Archie suggests applying blush on in a triangular area from the apple of the cheeks outwards towards the temple.
For my Asian skin, I find peachy tones to suit my everyday look better. I use the Maybelline Clear Smooth Minerals Healthy Natural Luminous Blush in True Peach (W01). Peach tones also fit the morena skin. For those with fairer skin tone, pinkish and reddish tones fit them better.
On some days when I want a fairer look, especially when I’m using pink and red as my eyeshadow, I complement it with a more pinkish blush.
Of course the make up looks incomplete without lip color. I use various shades of lip sticks for my everyday wear depending on my mood and what I’m wearing. But basically I stick to two colors: either a matte brownish shade or a more shimmery shade of dark pink.
To finish my look and give it a matte finish, I finish my look with a layer of Maybelline Clear Smooth Minerals Powder Foundation.
Remember to cleanse off all the make up at the end of the day, and keep your skin always clean and hydrated. Drinking a lot of water and having a healthy diet keeps the skin healthy. I also suggest grooming your eyebrows at least once a week.
Make sure you use make up and shades which suit your skin. More expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better.
It might seem that there are too many steps to achieving a look that looks like there is no make up at all but with constant practice and everyday application, basic everyday make up will become easier and will come out more naturally.
It’s all well worth it. Make up will give you more confidence and give you that boost to face your hectic day with a better attitude. Just compare my before and after pics to see how much different you can look. And Archie did all those in less than 30 minutes. Make yourself shine better with proper make up application.
